  • Levi-Strauss looks for the theme(s) underlying the great variation in human cultures, and which he compares to a theme and variations in music.  Here is the theme and first seven variations from Bach's Golberg Variations, played by Glenn Gould.  Gould is a great interpreter of Bach, but he's a bit strange to watch, so you may want to just close your eyes and listen.
